Lesson Plan: Money

WELCOME WFMWers!
For info about the Money Game, scroll to the bottom of the post!

Today we did a lesson on coins. We worked on identifying the various coins by name, talked about what their values were and saw how many of each coin were needed to make $1.00. Abby also wrote out the values on the chalkboard. I set the timer for 30 minutes and when the beeper went off, she was still into it.

Supplies Needed:

Various Coins
Abacus
Money Worksheet (for matching and writing – link found below)
100 chart (linked below)
Something to write with and on (we used the worksheet and also our chalkboard and chalk).

Activities:

  • Name each coin
  • Match the coins to the coins on the worksheet
  • Write the name of each coin
  • Write out the values of each coin
  • Give the child 10 dimes and have them move one dime and 10 beads on the abacus. That equals $1.00 – Then do that same activity with quarters, nickels and pennies
  • Talk about the abacus and the fact that each row has 10 beads and that that is the same value as a dime. All the beads pushed over is 100 and that is the same value as $1.00, etc.
  • Let the child use the abacus to add up coins – For example, a quarter, a dime, a nickel and a penny = 41 cents.
  • Write out the values on the chalkboard after you add them up
  • Use the 100 chart to count by 10′s, 5′s and 25′s.

FAMILY NIGHT MONEY GAME:

I found a great link for a money / reasoning game that we played together tonight after dinner. Even Nathan (2 and a half) was able to play some!

***We modified it a bitHere’s what you’ll need to play the money game:***

  • Coins (you’ll need mostly pennies and nickels and a few dimes and quarters).
  • A tupperware container for the coins (this is the “bank”)
  • One die (or dice – whatever you want to call it!)

Goal – First one to get a quarter, wins!

Directions:

  • Roll the die – have player identify how many dots landed facing up.
  • Child gets to get one penny per dot.
  • When you collect 5 pennies, you can trade them in for a nickel
  • When you get 2 nickels, you can trade them in for a dime
  • First one to accumulate enough money to cash in 2 dimes and a nickel towards a, WINS! (And they get to keep the quarter for their piggy bank!)

We had SO much fun playing this! Abby was able to “get” the concept that five pennies EQUALS a nickel and that 2 nickels EQUALED a dime and so on. She also made up a fun rule that any time someone rolled a 5, they had to get up and run around the room. (Gotta keep it lively, ya know!)
