Using a 10 frame for math

I love that there are so many awesome (free!) resources available on-line for teaching kids in virtually every subject area. Last week I ran across this youtube video for teaching Kindergarten Math.

I loved this idea of using this visual method of counting to 10 and helping kids to memorize their sums. I whipped up a few 10 frame cards using photoshop and laminated them and we’ve been using them every day for our math lessons. Be sure to watch the video above to get the idea. Abby is responding well to it and I’m even using them some with Nathan!

There’s also an awesome ON-LINE GAME using the 10 frame that allows kids to perform various operations including regrouping for sums past 10.

Here are the cards if you’d like to download them! :)

Chalkboard Lesson: Number Grid

I have noticed that lots of Kindergarten math lessons employ number grids as a part of the teaching strategy. I love the using the 100 chart and have used it in several different ways. Skip counting and coin counting are just some of the ways that a number grid can be helpful. Today I decided to make a grid on the chalkboard and let Abby practice counting by twos. I simply filled in the odd numbers from 1-99 and left off all the even numbers. Abby filled them all in and then she counted out loud by twos for Nana by simply reading all the numbers she had written.

Here are some more ideas for using the number grid:

Chalkboard Lesson: Number Line

We’ve been getting mucho mileage out of the hallway chalkboard. (Oh – and did you notice? My fabulous, wonderful husband built a frame around it for me?)

Nathan loves for me to draw pictures and he guesses what they are and then we sound out the words and he tells me what letters to write.

Today Abby and I did some of our math lesson at the chalkboard using a number line to add and subtract.

I drew a number line from 0 – 10 and then wrote several equations on the board and she had to figure out where to start and whether to go up or down the number line by observing if there was a plus or minus sign.

We also did some of this on paper but she enjoyed doing it on the chalkboard even more.

Then, we watched this silly little video:

I’m loving this teaching gig!
